Table of Losses

Found among the papers of Fitz John Winthrop, Governor of Connecticut (1698-1707), this document records the official losses to Deerfield, Massachusetts, as a result of the 1704 raid on the town. It was probably prepared by Colonel Samuel Partridge, military commander of the frontier militia. In table form the document lists the heads of household and records who was taken captive, killed, or remained alive at home. It also indicates what property was lost. The figures in the "estate lost" column represent pounds, the monetary unit of New England at the time. Prepared shortly after the raid, the table has some errors. Corrections were added later based on town records or on the authority of the Reverend Stephen Williams, one of the captives.
